Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Finally Add Colosseum Mode

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have added the long-awaited Colosseum Mode, which allows players to battle each other in a variety of different ways.

Nintendo has been teasing the addition of the mode since Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl launched in November, but didn't say when it would be coming. The latest 1.20 patch notes for the game announced that Colosseum Mode was finally arriving in the game, alongside a handful of other online focused updates.

Players can now visit the second floor of the Pokémon Centre to battle online or locally against other trainers in Single, Double, or Multi Battles, and also apply custom rules to the fight.

The Colosseum Mode has been a staple of the Pokémon games since Gold and Silver, though Multi Battles, which are basically two on two fights, are a more recent addition.

Custom rules allow players to change the number of Pokémon used, apply a level cap, ban "special" Pokémon, and disallow duplicates of Pokémon and items.

Union Room functions were also expanded, now allowing eight players (instead of the two at launch) to trade and battle online or locally.

Developer Game Freak has also added a blocker that stops Pokémon that were acquired via "unintended or illicit modification" from being used online, or traded. Incredibly vaguely, it also said that Version 1.2.0 "fixed some issues for more pleasant gameplay".

IGN said Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were "great", as the games are "solid and enduring – leaning on the past, with all of its triumphs and tripwires."
