Fortnite Account Merge Feature Delayed to 2019

Epic Games has pushed back Fortnite's account merge feature from November 2018 to "early next year."

Scheduled for a November roll-out, the studio has now stated that the feature will be pushed back to 2019 due to technical issues.

Pokemon Go: Niantic Seemingly Teasing PvP

Since its launch in July 2016, Pokemon Go has been a strictly PvE affair – but that might finally be about to change.

In a tweet today, Niantic seemed to tease the forthcoming arrival of a PvP mode. The tweeted image appears to show a player-controlled trainer on a grassy playing field, with some well-worn patches where the Pokemon would stand. The image is accompanied only by a pair of exclamation marks and a shocked emoji.

Battlefield 5 Players Feel Like They're Dying Too Quickly, DICE Working on a Fix

DICE's core gameplay designer says changes are coming to both time-to-kill (TTK) and time-to-die (TTD).

Battlefield 5 launched last week, and players been vocal in their criticisms of TTD, saying that death currently feels too fast and frustrating with comparison to previous games in the series.

DICE core game designer, Florian Le Bihan, has tweeted that changes to both TTK and TTD are on the horizon. DICE has now posted about the issue and how it could be resolved on Reddit.

One Artifact Card Currently Costs More Than the Game Itself

Unlike competing free-to-play card games like Gwent and Hearthstone, Valve's Artifact has a $20 up-front cost. However, that might not be the biggest purchase you make, as one of Artifact's cards costs more than the game itself.

Spotted by PC Gamer, Axe (at time of writing) is currently being sold on the Steam Community Market for a minimum of $21.71, with many players selling their cards at well above that price.

Red Dead Online Review in Progress

The Red Dead Online experience is one that stretches from moments of patient player management that are barely distinguishable from Red Dead Redemption 2’s single-player component, to the complete chaos of PvP multiplayer in indiscriminate, close-quarters slaughter. It’s proven reliable and robust for me over the past two days, even with its beta caveat, and despite a few concerns I’ve had a lot of fun of fun returning to the Wild West and carving out a fresh identity for my new avatar.

In my first two days embedded in Rockstar’s sprawling shared world I’ve hunted game, harassed griefers, hijacked a train, and had no less than three haircuts. I’ve partnered with friends to take on traditional missions bookended with well-produced cutscenes, and stalked total strangers through a shrinking section of forest with just a handful of throwing knives in small-scale battles royale. I’ve warily quaffed beers with an unknown player in a Blackwater bar and been lassoed and towed behind another player’s horse for no apparent purpose.

Shantae Studio to Help Finish Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night developer ArtPlay has brought Shantae: Half-Genie Hero developer WayForward Technologies on board to help with development.

Announced through Bloodstained’s Kickstarter page, producer Koji Igarashi called WayForward a "top-tier" developer of side-scrolling action games, adding that he worked with one of WayForward's employees on a previous project. Igarashi said WayForward would help him to realize his vision for the game.

The producer added that WayForward has been "helping to improve the game and fix any bugs that pop up." There's one bug in particular that's currently making Bloodstained crash, but Igarashi said it'll be fixed with the new partner studio's help.

US Army Plans to Use Microsoft's HoloLens for Combat Missions, Training

Microsoft has won a "$480 million contract to supply prototypes for augmented reality systems to the Army for use on combat missions and in training."

As reported by Bloomberg, this contract could lead to the US Army purchasing over 100,000 HoloLens headsets, intending to "increase lethality by enhancing the ability to detect, decide and engage before the enemy."

While the U.S. Army and Israeli military have been running training programs with Microsoft HoloLens, these next steps would prepare them in use for live combat.

While the Army will be using HoloLens devices, they will obviously be different than the consumer-grade products as they will look to "incorporate night vision and thermal sensing, measure vital signs like breathing and “readiness,” monitor for concussions and offer hearing protection."

BioWare Teases Dragon Age Announcement

BioWare General Manager Casey Hudson teased a Dragon Age announcement in a recent post on BioWare's official blog.

"If you’ve been following these blogs, or myself and Mark Darrah on Twitter, you know we’re also working on some secret Dragon Age stuff,” said Hudson. "Dragon Age is an incredibly important franchise in our studio, and we’re excited to continue its legacy.  Look for more on this in the coming month (though I won’t tell you where to look…)."

While "Dragon Age stuff" doesn't necessarily mean BioWare is gearing up to announce the next entry in the role-playing franchise, the timing of this news is interesting. It’s possible this announcement could come during The Game Awards, which airs on December 6.

Underworld Ascendant Review

I had finally done it. After several hours of navigating bugs and glitches, surviving enemies whose AI seemed to ping-pong between omniscient and ludicrously stupid, and maze-like level design, I had reached the end of an area of Underworld Ascendant that had given me considerable trouble. I actually paused, allowed myself to feel that relief and euphoria one gets when they never have to look at something terrible again. The portal to the exit was before me. I stepped forward.

...And fell through the floor, as the geometry of the Stygian Abyss decided arbitrarily to render itself ethereal. The Ascendant, Underworld’s protagonist, plummeted into some sort of netherscape that forced a reset to escape, and, thanks to Underworld Ascendant’s ludicrous save system, all progress in the level in question was lost. An entire night spent meticulously poking around, exploring, fighting, and sneaking was rendered moot by something beyond my control.

5 Predictions for the 2018 Game Awards

The Game Awards airs live on Thursday, December 6 (watch it live on IGN starting at 6pm PT/9pm ET). Over the years, host and executive producer Geoff Keighley has built the event into not only a celebration of the gaming year coming to a close but a look ahead at the one to come. With that, we’ve got a few predictions on what announcements may be in store for us at the last major gaming event of 2018.

Yeah, Reggie just downplayed anything happening anytime soon with Nintendo’s third pillar. But the fact of the matter is that they’ve probably got something to show by now, even if it’s just a CG trailer. And Keighley has a knack of getting major exclusives out of Nintendo. Look no further than 2014, when he scored a video of Miyamoto running around Hyrule from a Nintendo conference room. As someone who does this for a living, I can assure you, getting that is no easy task. Or take last year, when Zelda’s Master Cycle was revealed at The Game Awards. Point is, I think Reggie is playing coy, and Metroid is coming out to play – in some form – at this year’s event.

Fortnite Blamed for Video Game Addiction in Kids Who Need Digital Rehab

Epic Games' battle royale shooter is getting more flak for allegedly contributing to video game addiction in kids.

Fortnite has come under fire once again for having a detrimental effect on younger players. A child psychologist claims that there has been a marked increase in kids attending counseling on account of video game addiction, which may or may not be tied to the uptake of players since the game's launch.

“This game is like heroin,” said British behavioural specialist, Lorrine Marer, whose work involves dealing with children suffering from video game addiction. “Once you are hooked, it’s hard to get unhooked."

Bloomberg reports on a number of parents and professionals recounting their experiences on Twitter that include a 17-year old playing for 12 hours a day and falling asleep in class, to over half of certain groups of kids getting counseled for video game addiction at a handful of camps in North Carolina playing the game to excess.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Gets Day One Patch to Fix Replay System

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will receive a patch on launch day in order to fix issues with its game replay system.

In an interview with Famitsu, via ComicBook, game director Masahiro Sakurai said that the patch would be necessary for anyone purchasing the physical version of the game, while those downloading the digital version would have it included with their initial installation automatically.

Fallout 76's $200 Power Armor Edition Shipped With Bag of Cheaper Quality Than Promised

Bethesda shipped Fallout 76's Power Edition with a cheap nylon bag instead of the promised canvas.

The Fallout 76 Power Armor Edition included a number of goodies for players to enjoy, from a wearable T-51b helmet to a canvas West Tek duffel bag, but - as we discovered in our unboxing video - the duffel that was shipped was a cheap nylon replacement, and players who dropped $200 on it aren't happy. They're even less ecstatic with Bethesda's response, which has been to offer $5 of in-game currency to make up for it.

There's a whole thread full of disgruntled customers on Reddit, via Kotaku. Twitter user LanternCupcake is amongst the many ticked off players, and contacted Bethesda to get answers.

5 Things Fallout 5 Can Learn From Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is Bethesda Game Studios’ first foray into multiplayer for the popular series. Unfortunately, its launch has drawn tepid responses, to put it mildly.

But what it has undoubtedly succeeded in doing is generating even more anticipation for a new single-player Fallout game, and while 76 may not have stuck its landing, it does have a few ideas worth carrying forward—and some lessons that should definitely be taken to heart.

Here are five things Fallout 5 can learn from Fallout 76.

It’s Past Time to Recreate Creation

While Fallout 76 looks spectacular in some places—especially when the lighting and atmosphere really click—the Creation Engine’s technical limitations were conspicuous in Fallout 4 back in 2015. In 2018, they’re inexcusable. Fallout 76’s performance is hindered by frequent stutters, game crashes, and launch consoles struggling to maintain a reasonable framerate—not to mention the lack of a field-of-view slider. It’s a shame the Creation Engine is known for these issues, and not as an efficient design platform both Bethesda and modders expertly use to build bigger, better worlds. The next Fallout game is unlikely to use a new engine, but we can at least hope Bethesda is willing to go to whatever lengths are necessary to bring Creation up to par.

Rumors of Rocksteady's Superman Game Circle Back Ahead of the Game Awards

A new listing appeared on Game System Requirements with the title of Superman: World's Finest and the developer listed as Rocksteady Studios.

The listing was noticed by a user on ResetEra who searched on Game System Requirements' website for currently rumored games to compare credibility, such as GTA VI, Half Life 3, and Bloodborne 2 – with none of them being listed.

Game System Requirements details required specs for PC games, and the user pointed out the Terms of Use and FAQ on the website make it difficult for just anyone to post a random game or rumor. A Devil May Cry 5 listing also appeared on the website last spring, approximately one month prior to the game's official announcement.

9 Things Artifact Doesn't Tell You

Artifact isn’t a hard game to pick-up and play, but it is a complex one. As a card game with three lanes, five heroes, and even an item shop, there’s a lot of intricacies that aren’t explained in it it’s fairly surface-level tutorial. Here are nine important things Artifact doesn’t tell you:

Signature Cards

An Artifact decks must have a minimum of 40 cards, but 15 of those cards are determined by the five heroes you pick. Every hero automatically adds three copies of its unique signature card to your deck, which can’t be added any other way. That means if you see Zeus in an enemy line-up, you know Thunder God’s Wrath is in their deck – it also means that if he isn’t, you don’t have to worry about that particular card at all.

PlayStation Classic Review

One of the earliest marketing slogans for Sony’s first video game console was “Don’t underestimate the power of PlayStation.” It’s now 24 years later and it’s the power of nostalgia that can’t be undervalued, particularly when you first turn on the PlayStation Classic and are instantly teleported back more than two decades by the iconic Sony Computer Entertainment splash screen and sweeping synth sound. Unfortunately, this nostalgic jolt doesn’t last past scrolling through the short menu of just 20 included games, as this adorable miniature version of the most popular gaming console of the ‘90s lacks too many big names to truly live up to the ‘Classic’ label.

That’s not to say there aren’t some heavy hitters in the 20 games included on the PlayStation Classic roster, and certainly such a short list could never be absolutely definitive when culled down from the thousands of games that were released over the system’s six-year lifespan. But a lineup of ‘classic’ PlayStation games without a Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Wipeout, or Crash Bandicoot, to name a few of the most glaring omissions, makes for a compilation that feels decidedly incomplete and not really reflective of the system at its best, particularly at its relatively high price point ($99.99USD/£89.99GBP/$149.95AUD). It’s basically the gaming equivalent of getting front row seats at a Guns ‘n’ Roses concert and having the band not play anything off Appetite for Destruction.

Darksiders III Review

We haven’t seen many games like Darksiders III in the past decade or so. It’s a third-person action game that isn’t afraid to grind your progress to a halt for an hour or more until you figure out how to beat a seemingly-impossible boss. It doesn’t seem to aspire to match the visual polish of this year’s biggest blockbusters, and its design philosophy completely disregards all the hand-holding and coddling that has become the norm outside of Dark Souls and its brethren. But the combat is satisfying – and, you know, maybe not every game needs to be a giant open world with a million things to collect and a never-ending supply of side quests. Darksiders III fits comfortably in that spot.

Same Same But Different: Red Dead Redemption 2 vs The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

What’s wonderful about video games is that different games – and teams – can tackle the same concepts and ideas in fundamentally different ways. Take The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2. Two wildly different games in most respects, but in some ways they’ve incorporated very similar ideas into their respective open worlds. Both games offer incredibly rich destinations, dense with systems and content, but little direct explanation. These are games that want players to discover how they work and the things that are possible on their own. Importantly, however, beyond their core ambitions, both games also put an emphasis on a number of other, more specific things – the importance of horses as transport and companions, changing clothes according to climate, hunting and gathering as core gameplay elements, dynamic weather and day/night cycles, and so on.

14 Best Modern Metroidvanias

‘Metroidvania’ has become a buzzword in recent years, most often appearing as a bullet point in indie game descriptions. As the name suggests, it describes a game whose design borrows ideas from the likes of Castlevania and Metroid; its challenging, exploration-based, and progression throughout is based on acquiring items or upgrades to access new areas.

Because many of the best examples of Metroidvanias pair it with elements of other games – most often roguelikes and RPGs – it’s sometimes difficult to define exactly what a Metroidvania is. For this list, we’re sticking to the basics while casting a somewhat wide net.

Listed below are some of the very best modern Metroidvania games currently available.

Wreck-It Ralph has popped up unexpectedly in Fortnite, and no one can quite work out what's making him appear.

Hearthstone: See a Brand New Rastakhan’s Rumble Card

Rastakhan’s Rumble is almost upon us, and the set is shaping up to be a huge amount of fun. The broad theme takes us to the Gurubashi Arena (which World of Warcraft players on the Horde side would be familiar with), and to a contest presided over by Rastakhan, king of the Zandalari, and ruler of the great troll empire. Long story short, it's an excuse for trolls and other warriors to battle it out for glory.

Each class has its own “team”, and these are centred around their “Loa” or beastly deities. Rogue, for instance, are known as Gral’s Sharks, named after their Loa - Gral, the Shark. Each Loa is a legendary minion and accompanied by a Spirit that strengthens what that Loa is attempting to do. The Rogue companion card, Spirit of the Shark, obviously works well the turn before Gral, allowing you to trigger its battlecry twice, not to mention playing into the many great battlecry and combo cards in the game.

Battlefield V Review

Welcome, Battlefield fans! Now that we’ve taken in-depth looks at the single-player and multiplayer sides of Battlefield V, it’s time for our final overview and verdict. For the full picture, make sure to check out each part.

While it’s absolutely a massive and addictive shooter, there’s little question in my mind that Battlefield V launched well before it was ready. Between the brevity and lack of gameplay variety in the single-player campaign, the problems that arise when playing anything other than Conquest on certain maps, and perhaps most troubling of all, the frequent and sometimes game-breaking bugs are all issues that seem like they could be solved with a couple more months of development time.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Was October 2018's Best-Selling Game

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was October 2018’s best-selling game in North America, beating out Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 in this highly-competitive month.

Not only did Black Ops 4 become the best-selling game of the month, it almost instantly became the best-selling game of the year, and its launch month dollar sales are the eighth highest on record since NPD began tracking game sales in 1995. Black Ops 4 was the best-selling game of October on both PlayStation 4  and Xbox One.

Though exact numbers weren’t provided in NPD’s official report, we do know that Red Dead Redemption 2 only had nine days that it was on sale in NPD’s October sales window ending on November 3. These launch month sales were more than triple what the original Red Dead Redemption sold in its launch month, and it’s already the second best-selling game of the year.

Warframe Review - Switch Update

There aren’t many games that make me feel as cool as Warframe does when I’m bullet-jumping through the air at breakneck speeds. While this free-to-play co-op shooter has wildly outgrown its original “space ninja” reputation since it first came out in 2013 – adding open-world areas, deep story missions, and even a hoverboard with a Tony Hawk-style scoring system – it’s the way it makes everything you do feel fast, powerful, and just plain awesome that keeps me coming back to its almost-endless well of loot.

Warframe is a dense game – a tangled ball of yarn made up of almost six years of updates, additions, system reworks, and content drops. Its different bits and pieces overlap and twist together in a way that can make it overwhelming to even think about trying to untangle it all, but it also means that there’s an almost inconceivable amount of deep and often extremely entertaining content to discover once you do.

CD Projekt Red Teases Hacking Mechanisms in Cyberpunk 2077

As reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, Reddit user bboymurchant posted a conversation he had with the official Cyberpunk 2077 Facebook account. He asked how hacking works in the game.

"Netrunning will definitely be an important part of the game, but I can’t tell you much about it,” the account replied. "What I can say is that, gameplay-wise, you’ll be able to hack systems to help you during missions, open doors, distract enemies, etc. You’ll also be able to gain knowledge that you will use to your advantage -- locations of interesting places and so on."

Soon after, CEO Pete Hawley announced a team of 25 employees would remain on board to "fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners." While Telltale hasn't officially commented on the specifics of those obligations, reports indicated the remaining team was set to complete development on Minecraft: Story Mode for Netflix. However, according to former Telltale narrative designer Rachel Noel on Twitter, those remaining employees have now been laid off as well.

Voice Actor Claims Mortal Kombat 11 Is on the Way

A new Mortal Kombat project, possibly Mortal Kombat 11, is in the works, according to a pair of tweets by Spanish-language voice actor José Eduardo Garza Escudero.

First reported by Game Informer, Escudero says he had originally been tapped by localization company Pink Noise Studios to be the Spanish language voice of Mortal Kombat characters Kung Lao and Reptile in a new game. Pink Noise, however, ultimately removed Escudero from the roles, and the actor took to Twitter to talk about it.

"Well finally I confirm that the 'professionals' of Pink Noise decided to remove my characters from Mortal Kombat 11," reads a Google translation of Escudero's tweet. "How sad that a company that wanted a lot ends up making decisions that affect both you, the consumers. Goodbye Kung Lao and Reptile."

Spyro Fans Angered at Activision's Response to Missing Subtitles

When Activision released Spyro Reignited Trilogy last week, some players were upset to discover that there are no subtitles available for cutscenes. Activision has since issued a statement regarding the missing subtitles, but it doesn't seem to be placating fans.

"When Toys For Bob set out to make an awesome game collection, there were certain decisions that needed to be made throughout the process," reads Activision's statement to GamePitt. "The team remained committed to

the integrity and legacy of Spyro that fans remembered intact.

"The game was built from the ground up using a new engine for the team (Unreal 4) and was localized in languages that had not previously been attempted by the studio. While there’s no industry standard for subtitles, the studio and Activision care about the fans’ experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities and will evaluate going forward."

Artifact Payment Model Causes Backlash, Valve Responds

Artifact, Valve’s online trading card game, has received some considerable backlash from fans for its “pay for everything” payment model - and Valve has given an official response.

As reported by PC Gamer, fans have a bevy of complaints about the game’s payment model. Despite the base game with its initial set of cards costing $20, fans will have to pay $2 for every booster pack of cards. Fans can also win more cards by playing drafting modes using event tickets (which cost real-world money to purchase) or buy and sell specific cards in the marketplace, which Valve also profits off of.

Scrubs Actor Says Epic 'Jacked' His Dance for Emote

Scrubs actor Donald Faison's "Poison" dance has become a popular emote in Fortnite, but Faison isn't entirely psyched that Epic Games used his moves in the game.

Speaking at a Scrubs cast reunion panel at Vulture Festival 2018, Faison, who played Turk on the show, was asked to perform the dance. He declined, telling those interested to just play Fortnite because they "jacked that s**t".

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence pointed out that the emote is taken from a screen capture, meaning it is exactly the same dance. You can see just how accurate the in-game version is in a side-by-side comparison by YouTuber A_Rival Planetskill

Smash Ultimate: Everything You Need to Know About Story Mode

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch features a single-player mode called World of Light, which is all about collecting “spirits” to power up your roster of characters. The mode amounts to a series of challenges that reward you with spirits so you can, in turn, collect more spirits that can be upgraded and help you conquer bigger and tougher challenges. It’s an admittedly addictive system filled to the brim with delightful fan service, and while I didn’t finish my playtime thinking this will be the mode I pour the most hours into, it was a fun way to test my skills as a Smash player.

How Challenges Work

Challenges are primarily how you collect spirits, so completing Challenges will be what you spend most of your time doing in World of Light. Difficulty can vary wildly, so to give yourself the best shot at success you’re encouraged to read the prep screen and go in with the proper spirits equipped. (See us take on five Challenges in the video below.)

Battlefield V - Multiplayer Review

Welcome, Battlefield fans! This year, we've broken up the review into its single-player and multiplayer components to give fans of each style of play a better idea of what's up. This review covers only the multiplayer mode – read the single-player review here, and stand by for the overall Battlefield V review, coming soon.

With all of the development muscle behind EA DICE’s massive shooter, I didn’t expect going in that playing Battlefield V’s multiplayer would feel so much like discovering a very promising early access game. It appears that there’s a sizeable number of modes and major bug fixes still to be delivered. To its credit, a cavalcade of clever gameplay changes succeeds in taking the series’ standard 64-player warfare in a more tactical direction, but the execution of this long-awaited return to a World War II setting simply feels rushed. Still, there's plenty of dynamic FPS fun to be had in the Battlefield V of today, and it’s the kind of shooter I could see becoming one of the best in the series’ history after some substantial updates.

Pokemon’s Most Powerful, Valuable Competitive Card Just Got a Whole Lot Easier to Obtain

If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

If there’s one card in the current competitive Pokemon scene that could be agreed upon as the most powerful of them all, it would be Tapu Lele-GX. Most players use at least one copy, but it’s not uncommon to see multiple copies in a deck. The 2018 Pokemon TCG World Champion used three in his deck. It’s just that good.

First Gears Pop! Gameplay Revealed

The Coalition has provided a first look at Gears Pop! gameplay, which offers a condensed real-time strategy experience with a few special Gears of War touches.

Revealed in a developer video, you can watch a single PvP match between studio head Rod Fergusson and lead game designer Tyler Bielman. Though a “soft” launch is coming soon, a wide release of the game will come sometime in 2019 for iPhones and Androids.

“The object of the game is to play out your units and push forward and take down the outposts and the leader at the opposite end of the field,” said Bielman.

You progressively take cover attempting to get to the other end of the field: destroying an enemy outpost at the other end will net you a single point. A power bar at the bottom of the screen fills up in discrete segments, with each unit costing a certain ammount of these segments to play.
