Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson will come together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter film series in a new reunion special for HBO Max. The special will also include Chris Columbus, who directed The Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, as well as other cast members from the series.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts is a reunion that will drop on HBO Max on January 1. It will air on TBS and Cartoon Network in Spring 2022, sometime before the April 15 release date of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Other cast members taking part in the reunion include Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, and Ian Hart, and more.
According to the press release, the reunion will feature all-new interviews and cast conversations celebrating the history of the films, taking place at the original Hogwarts movie sets. The project sounds similar to HBO Max's Friends: The Reunion, which brought the sitcom's main cast back together to celebrate and reflect on the show and its legacy.
Today's announcement makes no mention of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who has come under fire for her anti-transgender views. It seems the controversial author will not be a part of the reunion.
While Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson haven't played Harry, Ron, and Hermione since The Deathly Hallows Part 2, Columbus hopes to get everyone together for a movie version of The Cursed Child, a 2016 Harry Potter play that takes place well after the book series ends. We'll have to wait and see if this reunion makes any mention of that possible project.
In the meantime, Warner Bros. is developing a potential Harry Potter TV series, and the video game Hogwarts Legacy, which will let players create transgender characters.
