Animal Crossing: New Horizons - How to Unlock and Upgrade Nook's Cranny

One of the most useful shops in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Nook’s Cranny. The store, run by Timmy and Tommy, sells a wide selection of decorations and furniture that can’t be crafted, as well as select DIY recipes, flower seeds, tools, and more. They’ll also buy turnips for varying prices and let you sell “Hot Items” for double their base price. Nook's Cranny is open from 8am to 10pm, and when it is closed you can even leave items in a drop box and pick up the money the next day. At the beginning of the game, however, you’ll only have access to Timmy and Tommy’s temporary set-up at the Resident Services tent. If you're looking to unlock Nook's Cranny we cover how to do that further below. If you want to upgrade Nook's Cranny, keep reading. How to Upgrade Nook’s Cranny

Unlike everything you’ve done up until this point, unlocking this upgrade will take some time. And, remember, once you do unlock the upgrade, your Nook's Cranny will be closed for an entire day while renovations are underway. Isabelle will make an announcement about the planned renovations, so you'll have time to prepare for the temporary closure. These are the requirements to upgrade Nook’s Cranny:
  1. Buy and sell a combined total of 200,000 Bells worth of items
  2. Spend at least 30 days on your island since Nook’s Cranny was built
  3. Upgrade Resident Services to a Town Hall (you may also need to have the campground built as well, though this should be done if you've been playing 30 days)
  4. Have the Able Sisters set up their shop on your island
If you're playing regularly you'll likely earn the upgrade naturally. The upgraded version of the store is a much nicer looking shop and features more items for sale each day. It'll have three spaces for higher-end large and expensive items, two spaces for smaller items, and an extra seasonal item in the corner at certain times of the year. The following new items are for sale in the upgraded Nook's Cranny cabinet:
  • Colorful/Outdoorsy Fishing Rod
  • Star/Colorful/Outdoorsy Net
  • Elephant/Colorful/Outdoorsy Watering Can
  • Colorful/Outdoorsy Shovel
  • Colorful/Outdoorsy Slingshot
  • Iron Axe
  • 9 Flower Seeds (3 Types of Flowers, 3 Colors Each)
  • 2 Umbrellas
  • 2 Wrapping Papers
  • Timer Tool
  • 8 Wallpapers
  • 8 Flooring

How to Unlock Nook's Cranny

The first step towards Nook’s Cranny opening for business is paying off your initial island getaway bill of 5,000 Nook Miles. You’ll then be able to talk to that old crook Tom Nook to upgrade your house – and be landed with another bill. Once your home is complete, head to Resident Services and you’ll see Timmy talking with Tom Nook about opening a shop. Speak to Timmy to get a list of materials. You’ll need to gather the following items to unlock Nook's Cranny:
  • 30 Wood
  • 30 Softwood
  • 30 Hardwood
  • 30 Iron Nuggets
Obviously you’ll need to spend some time chopping trees and gathering iron nuggets from rocks on your island. You may also want to visit a random uncharted island using the Nook Miles Ticket in order to find more resources. In any case, once you’ve gathered them all and given them to Timmy, he’ll let you choose the location for the store, and after a day of building, Nook’s Cranny will be available for all your shopping needs!
